Guidelines for Group Riding  Cruiser Club USA, Inc.

The number 1 rule for Cruiser Clubs is "Enjoy the Ride and Ride to Enjoy"

The number 2 rule for each ride is for everyone to return home safely after having a great time

To make sure these first two rules are never broken we have established some Guidelines to help our members to make good decisions while riding.  They are as follows:

Formation Riding, Standard Rules, Lane Changes, Hand Signals, Emergencies

Formation Riding
  • Riding will be in a staggered formation with the Road Captain either at the head of the left column or in the center at the head of the group

  • An Assistant Road Captain should ride in the center in case the group gets separated.  An experienced rider or Assistant Road Captain should ride in the next to last position to take charge in case the Assistant Road Captain stops to assist someone else

  • The Assistant Road Captain will ride at the rear of the group in the center so that the Road Captain will have a clear view of him at all times

  • The Road Captain has the authority to change the lineup as he/she sees fit.

  • When riding through curves or on curvy roads single file is permitted; however, two columns should be formed as soon as possible

  • Bikes should maintain approximately a two second interval from the bike directly in front of them and a one second interval from the bike diagonal from them.

Riding Rules
  • ABSOLUTELY NO "HORSE PLAY" OF ANY KIND WILL BE TOLERATED!

  • Any member observing dangerous activity should discuss it with the offender in an attempt to correct the problem.  If the problem persists, the Road Captain or one of the officers should be notified.  The Road Captain has the absolute authority to expel a rider from any ride or event fro the safety of the members or the club's image.

  • Use common sense at all times.

  • Pay attention to the riders surrounding you.

  • All riders will execute hand signals and turn signals properly.

  • Everyone should arrive with a full tank of fuel and tanks should be topped off at stops as needed.

  • No rider should break ranks or make any moves until directed to do so by the Road Captain.

  • If the rider directly in front of you should break ranks, you should pull up and fill the position -- DO NOT SWITCH COLUMNS.

  • The Road Captain makes all decisions regarding lane changes, stops, etc.

  • All lane changes start with a signal from the road Captain.

  • The Road Captain will give the proper hand and turn signal followed in order from the front to the rear of the formation.

  • The Assistant Road Captain (or last rider) makes the first move into the new lane as soon as it is safe.

  • Other riders should fill in from the rear forward with the Road Captain making the last move.

Hand Signals

The following signals will be used in addition to the standard right turn, left turn, slow/stop:

  • Single File formation:  When the Road Captain deems it necessary to ride single file, he/she will raise his left arm straight up with his index finger raised.  All other riders will duplicate this as they merge into a single column from the front to the rear observing the 2-second rule between bikes.

  • Staggered Formation:  The Road Captain will raise his left arm straight up with 2 fingers raised and rotating his wrist back and forth.  All other riders duplicate this as they form 2 columns from the front to the rear observing the 2-second rule between bikes.

  • Tighten formation:  When the Road Captain feels the formation should be tighter, he will raise his left arm straight up with his fingers spread wide and repeatedly close them into a fist.  All other riders will duplicate this as they close up all unnecessary space in the formation.

  • Road Hazard:  This signal can be initiated by anyone by simply pointing at the hazard.  All riders following will repeat this procedure.

EMERGENCIES
  • If a bike breaks down or a rider pulls out of formation -- DO NOT STOP.  Tighten up the formation by moving directly ahead to fill the empty space.

  • Let the Road Captain know there is a problem by blinking headlight and waving your left arm.  All riders should repeat this going forward until the Road Captain is aware there is a problem.

  • The Assistant Road Captain (or last rider) will stop to assist with the problem.

  • The road Captain will stop the group at the nearest and safest place and he or his designee will return and determine what action is to be taken.

  • The group will get underway as soon as possible to finish the ride.
